Continuous Lubomyr: Screening, Director Q&A and listening session

Saturday 13 August 2016, 2–4pm V22 Louise House

Lubomyr Melnyk is a Ukrainian pianist and composer credited with discovering ‘Continuous Music’, a technique involving unbroken, rapid streams of sustained notes, creating a full and ecstatic sound with rich overtones. This documentary film follows Lubomyr for three days, in and around his home in the Swedish countryside, reflecting on music, time, science, faith, poverty and interdimensional travel. The film will be followed by a Q&A with the director Stuart London, and a listening session comprising two of Melnyk's compositions.

"It's possible to draw a straight line between Melnyk's rhapsodic, ecstatic music and Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Charlemagne Palestine and American minimalist composition. Continuous Music is more than just a style though. For Melnyk it is a way of being. This documentary focuses on that being, Melnyk the man, rather than Melnyk's music. London, with great subtlety and sensitivity, constructs a portal into Melnyk's ontology, which at times borders on the absurd." - The Wire Magazine

Stuart London has worked in a wide range of different roles related to video and film for nearly two decades, from live music visuals to Hollywood blockbusters. He has previously written and recorded several radio plays for Resonance FM and is the singer in a metal band. Continuous Lubomyr is his first documentary film.

This event is part of the Summer Club Sound residency at V22 Summer Club 2016.

Anyone under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
